Chapter Thirteen
11:00PM
Lyric
A chill rode the air as the full moon glowed in the sky.
The game would start in less in an hour.
Poe owned the city tonight. He’d have top officials playing—all the wicked and corrupt. Some of us might die. In fact, all of us could die. Either way, everything would change when the sun rose over Eurika tomorrow.
Dressed, Connor and I drove in the limo toward the party.
I’d given up and worn another stupid twenty-five-thousand-dollar designer monstrosity. Granted, the money disgusted me, not the look.
It was an exquisite ombre gown—ombre being a French word for a color that gradually shaded in tone. Therefore, short tiers of pink tulle decorated the corset and then darkened to an intense rose red shade at the nipped-in waist. A voluminous skirt spread out, fading in color from red, pink, and then into an ivory white layer that grazed the floor when I walked.
I loved my mask the most. Half of it was red stones done in a Baroque design that appeared like an asymmetrical bouquet of jewels. The other half of the mask was white see-through lace that lay softly against my face.
Against Connor’s wishes, I brought my jean book bag with me, and I damn sure did not wear any heels. I’d planned on going barefoot. Surely, Le Mansion’s floors would be clean enough. There was something about the sensation of my feet right on the ground that made me feel more connected to the setting around me. And I needed to be as comfortable as possible. I couldn’t be thinking about the pain in my feet due to heels, when I had to look over my shoulder for a killer.
But, Connor had refused to let me leave the house without putting on shoes. He’d threatened to carry me around the whole time, and I believed him. He was a mad man, after all.
So, I compromised.
“You look captivating as usual. However. . .” Connor pointed to my sneakers. “You’re doing that gown an injustice.”
“You wouldn’t let me wear my slippers, so there was no other choice.”
“Heels would’ve been better.”
“I can’t run in heels and I plan on running tonight anytime something scares me. Half the time in those horror movies, the actress just needs some sneakers. Seriously. Am I the only person that’s thought that?”
“You won’t need to run. I’ll keep you safe. You just need to identify who Poe is.”
“Yep. That’s it. I figure out who the killer is, while you pretend like you can protect me from a murderer that you don’t have the identity of. Why am I even tripping? This is all so simple.” Sighing, I gave him a weak smile and winked. “You look nice. I didn’t realize Walmart made tuxedos.”
“Very funny. It’s Brioni.” He smiled.
“Sounds Italian.”
“Of course. All agree that the Italian fashion houses know tuxedos.” He slipped his fingers down the front of his jacket, and I thought of how good those fingers felt on my body earlier tonight. “This is tailored from Vicuna fur.”
“Sounds rare.
